Since 1994, Aquatic Plants has supported beach restoration initiatives to create coastal wildlife habitats and minimize storm impacts on US shorelines. State and Local governments seeking to establish and maintain healthy, sandy beaches and vegetated dune systems utilize the company’s services.
The American Shore & Beach Preservation Association (ASBPA) and the Texas General Land Office (GLO) invited Aquatic Plants to participate in their joint 2007 Fall Coastal Conference at the Galveston Island Convention Center Oct. 22-24.
Top coastal leaders throughout Texas and nationwide gathered for the coastal science and technology event. Approximately 400 people registered for the event, nearly double the number from previous ASBPA conferences.
Keynote speakers included Lyda Ann Thomas, Galveston Mayor, Mike R. Barnett, Director FDEP, Jerry Patterson, Commissioner, Texas General Land Office, and John Paul Woodley Jr., Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works).
In its early years, the ASBPA’s primary interest was in combating erosion and restoring eroded beaches. Recently, the work of the Association has been expanded to a broad range of activities and interests related to the overall planning and management of shores and beaches. Recognizing the great diversity of our coasts, the Association encourages regional workshops, as well as national meetings to benefit those working with shores and beaches.
Founded in 1926, the ASBPA represents the scientific, technical and political interests along the coast in an effort to shape national research and policy concerning shore and beach management and restoration. The group strives to engage a factual debate on coastal issues and economics that will foster sound, far-sighted and economical development and preservation of our shores and beaches; thereby aiding in placing their benefits within the reach of the largest possible number of people in accordance with the ideals of a democratic nation.
