Wetlands Mitigation Enforcements to Increase in Manatee County

February 14th, 2004

APF

Manatee’s Environmental Management Department has recently been under fire for neglecting code enforcement that requires maintenance and monitoring the health of mitigated wetlands. According to an article in the Bradenton Herald, Manatee inspectors have done follow-up inspections at perhaps only 60 percent of the wetland mitigation sites. The major problem facing developers is that many of the mitigation sites will have to be cleared of invasive and exotic species and replanted. In doing so, the sites will be reverted back to time zero, requiring 2-5 years of additional maintenance and monitoring.
